Nearly everyone gets a speeding ticket once in a while

Tickets that are less than 14 mph over the speed limit are not posted to the driver’s record. They are however in the case of CDL drivers. Here are the points you can receive from speeding:

In order for a state to be in compliance with the federal definition of an open container violation, they must prohibit any open container of alcohol in a vehicle as well as the consumption of any alcohol beverage within a vehicle. The state must also make it illegal for the passenger area of a motor vehicle to have any open alcohol container, including the glove compartment, when it is located on a public highway or right-of-way. For vehicles that don’t have trunks, an open alcohol container can be permitted behind the last upright seat or in an area not normally occupied by a driver or passengers.

  • 15 mph but less than 19 mph - 2 points
  • 19 mph but less than 24 mph - 3 points
  • 24 mph but less than 34 mph - 4 points
  • 34 mph or more - 6 points

Keep in mind, 15 points within a 24 month period can result in a license suspension. Drivers under 18 will have their license suspended with an accumulation of only 4 points in a 12 month period.

Work Zone Speeding

Hopefully you never find yourself charged with speeding in a work zone. Generally, fines are much more severe, even if no workers are present. In Arizona, fines can be as high as $2000 or you could spend 12 months in jail.

Should I fight the ticket?

It generally pays to fight a speeding ticket; particularly if you’re a repeat offender, facing jail time, or steep fines. And the last thing you want is points on your driver’s license. Your insurance rates are also likely to increase if you get even 1 point on your license for speeding.
